In Memory Of

Spanky

April, 2013

Spanky came from the same property as Dolly, Sapphire, and Happy. Their owner was a retired lawyer who lived near Journey's End on 10 acres of land. She was somewhat eccentric and lived in a van. The property was overgrown with vegetation and had quite a few rusting cars.

After the lady was killed in a car accident by a drunk driver, Journey's End volunteers were asked to try to get her 5 dogs. It was easy to catch Spanky--they just picked him up--and another one, a golden retriever named Cider, was trapped and placed into a home. Dolly, Happy, and Sapphire had become wild and were finally trapped after many months.

Spanky was sweet and friendly and lived for awhile in the PeeWee room. He liked playing tug-o-war with his friend D.J. He often burrowed his way under blankets.

Spanky eventually had to have major back surgery to fix 5 vertebrae. The surgery was very expensive and one of the vets predicted only a 50/50 chance of success, but it was his only chance at a good quality of life. Luckily he recovered very well. He was placed in foster care with Journey's End volunteer Mary Lou, so he could receive a lot of individual care and attention.
